VIETNAM - PARAGUAY RELATIONS


The Paraguayan people showed their solidarity and friendship to the Vietnamese people during Vietnam's struggle for independence, despite the fact that the Strosno military dictatorship supported the Saigon authority.

Vietnam and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on May 30th, 1995. The Vietnam's ambassador to Argentina is in charge of Paraguay.

Exchange of delegations: the delegation of the Paraguay Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed by the General Director of Bilateral Policy Department visited Vietnam (March, 2005), the Ambassador of Paraguay to Japan in charge of Vietnam Isao Taoka presented his credentials in May, 2006.

From Vietnam' side: Special Envoy of the Vietnamese Prime Minister - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Van Bang visited Paraguay (March, 2007).

Paraguay supported Vietnam to become a UN Security Council non-permanent member in the 2008-2009 term. The two countries signed an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders.

The two-way trade value is very small (reaching $2.2 million in 2006), Vietnam's import of cotton from Paraguay accounted for the large part (approximately $1.5 million).
