VIET NAM AND EAST TIMOR RELATIONS

At the invitation of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam attended the Independence Declaration Ceremony of East Timor in May 2002. On that occasion, Mr. Cam met with Timorese President Xanana Gusmao, Prime Minister Alkatiri, Speaker of Parliament Fransisco, Foreign Minister Ramos Horta and a number of other leaders and high-ranking officials of parliament and government.

On July 28, 2002 in Brunei, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien and Timorese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Jose Ramos Horta signed a joint communiqué announcing the establishment at ambassadorial level between the two countries.

From 7 to 12 March, 2003, Timorese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation paid an official visit to Viet Nam, meeting Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, holding talks with Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien as well as ministers of Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development and Fisheries and chairman of Vietnam’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

East Timor expects to promote the bilateral economic relations to take full advantage of its rich natural resource and inexpensive labor. It is also willing to welcome a Vietnamese business delegation to East Timor to seek investment opportunities and has promised to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses.

Currently, East Timor, through Indonesia, imports a considerable amount of goods from Viet Nam. In August 2003, a group of officials from the Viet Nam’s Ministry of Trade made a business trip to East Timor to seek ways to boost trade relations of the two countries. President of East Timor paid an official visit to Viet Nam from 8 - 10 August, 2005.
