- On September 1991: Viet Nam recognized  independence Lithuania.

- March 18, 1992, Viet Nam and Lithuania signed Protocol on Establishment of Diplomatic Relations at Ambassadorial level.

-  Ambassador of Viet Nam to Poland is also concurrently accredited to Lithuania. July 26, 2010 Ambassador Nguyen Hoang presented credentials to the President of Lithuania.

-  Ambassador of Lithuania to China assumes the post of Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

- On September 1995, Prime Minister of Lithuania visited Viet Nam. Two side signed an Agreement on Investment Promotion and Protection and an Agreement on Economic Cooperation.

- On November 1995, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Khanh visited Lithuania.

- On October 2004, Lithuanian Head of State participated in ASEM meetings in Hanoi.

- At the ASEM-9 in Hanoi in 2009, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and signed Protocol on political consultation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs. On this occasion, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania met with Chairman of People's Committee Nguyen The Thao, Deputy Ministry of Communications and Transport Ngo Duc Thinh.

- On October  2009, Minister of Communications and Transport of Viet Nam to attend Conferece Ministers Communications and Transport (ASEM 1) in Vinius.
