Vietnam ready to support earthquake and tsunami-hit countries

(VNA): The Vietnamese Government and people will continue, together with the international community, to support earthquake and tsunami-hit countries, pledged Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Head of the Vietnamese permanent representative mission to the United Nations, at the session of the 59th United Nations General Assembly on January 18.

On behalf of the Vietnamese Government and people, Ambassador Minh conveyed the deepest sympathy and sincere solidarity from Vietnam to the governments and people of the countries which have been heavily hit by the earthquake and tsunami.

Vietnam welcomed and supported drastic measures taken by the internationnal community to help earthquake and tsunami-hit countries in the recent period, Minh said, noting that the Vietnamese Government has decided to grant about half a million USD to help victims in such countries. Meanwhile, Vietnamese people and mass organisations have actively responded to fundraising drives, which were launched by the Vietnamese Government and Vietnam Red Cross, to grant relief aid to the victims.

On the same day, the Women's Association of ASEAN countries at the United Nations organised an astronomy festival to introduce special foods from ASEAN countries as part of these countries' activities to support earthquake and tsunami victims in Asia. The Vietnamese mission to the United Nations also actively engaged in the event./.
