AUF to focus on graduate training and research cooperation

Ha Noi (VNA) - The Agency of Francophone Universities (AUF) will focus its activities in Viet Nam on graduate training and research projects.

Philippe Devred, Director of the AUF Office for Asia and the Pacific, unveiled the plan during a talk with a Viet Nam News Agency correspondent.

With the aim of promoting the French language in Viet Nam, the AUF will organise French courses for students at universities and colleges to enable them to follow graduate programmes in the French language in Viet Nam, France, Canada or Belgium, Philippe said.

Additionally, Philippe said the AUF will send teachers to Viet Nam to help Vietnamese teachers improve their French language skills. The Vietnamese teachers will also be sent to French-speaking countries for more practice.

The Agency will organise short-term training courses in a French-speaking country for Vietnamese students or grant them scholarships to continue with M.A programmes in Francophone countries.

This year, one more AUF branch will be established at the Ha Noi Medical College. In addition to learning the French language at universities in Viet Nam, Vietnamese students will be able to receive French diplomas in their home country.

Recently, the Vietnamese and French governments have signed a framework agreement to recognise each other's degrees and qualifications in order to promote cooperation in training, especially the exchange of students.

Devred said that Vietnamese students want to study French because they are aware of the benefits they get from the language. Students of some universities, such as law and medical colleges, volunteer to learn French for the importance of the language in their future careers. In regard to other disciplines, including information technology, the quality of lectures given in French still attract a large number of students./.
