Viet Nam, France sign joint declaration on child adoption
(VNA): A Viet Nam-France joint declaration on child adoption was signed in Ha Noi on April 13 by Deputy Justice Minister Hoang The Lien and French Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Renaud Muselier.
At a press briefing the same day, French Secretary of State Muselier praised Viet Nam's plan to join the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. However, he asked Viet Nam to accelerate the process of processing remaining adoption dossiers under approved procedures.
The French official noted that child adoption is an extremely sensitive issue for not only Viet Nam and France but also other countries, stressing the importance of ethical behaviour.
Each year, around 5,000 French families adopt children. Of them, 4,000 welcome their new family members from overseas. Vietnamese children make up 10 percent of France's overseas adoptees.
Muselier's Apr. 11-13 visit to Viet Nam took place at a time when the French National Assembly is considering the ratification of the adoption law and the establishment of a new adoption agency. The operation regulation of the new agency is expected to be passed at the French NA on April 14.
During the visit, Muselier met with French entrepreneurs investing in Viet Nam. "The French business community in Viet Nam is very active. They are confident in their business prospects here," the French official said. He added that the French businesses are a reflection of France's trust in Viet Nam.
He also told reporters that he had toured the former battlefield of Dien Bien Phu and discussed with Vietnamese officials the repatriation of 13 sets of remains of French soldiers recently found in the Dien Bien Phu valleys./.
