PM Khai wants more economic ties with China's Yunnan province
(VNA): Prime Minister Phan Van Khai of Vietnam on July 6 expressed his desire for increased business and economic co-operation between Vietnam and China's southern Yunnan province.
At a meeting with Governor of Yunnan province, Xu Rongkai in Kunming, the Vietnamese leader, who was in Kunming for the second Summit of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) on July 5-6, said he hoped two-way trade between Vietnam and the province would hit US $2 billion in the years to come or double last year's volume.
The two sides should accelerate the tempo of economic co-operation projects such as the construction of the Lao Cai-Hekou bridge and the upgrade of the Hanoi-Lao Cai railway route, PM Khai said.
He also spoke highly of Yunnan province's rapid economic growth as well as its effective co-operation with Vietnamese localities in recent years.
Governor Xu said PM Khai's visit to Yunnan will help boost bilateral co-operation between Vietnamese localities and his province, which borders the Vietnamese provinces of Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Lai Chau and Dien Bien.
Yunnan's co-operation with its four Vietnamese neighbour provinces, particularly Lao Cai and Ha Giang, has been thriving, the Chinese official noted.
He told PM Khai that his province has constructed a highway linking Kunming to Hekou, which shares a boundary portion with Vietnam's Lao Cai province, that has facilitated two-way trade.
Governor Xu said he hoped for increased bilateral co-operation in trade and to join Vietnam's communication development projects.
While in Yunnan, the Vietnamese leader called in at the Kunming Steel Corporation and a botanic garden in Cheng Gong district.
Co-operation between Vietnam and Yunnan has been expanded to the business, tourism, and transport and communication sectors in recent years. Bilateral co-operation has been effective in utilizing the available resources and expertise of both sides for mutual interest.
In the afternoon of July 6, Prime Minister left Kunming for home.
