People-to-people diplomacy praised

People-to-people diplomacy is an important part of Viet Nam's foreign policy of diversification and multilateralisation, contributing to improving Viet Nam's prestige in the international arena, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

At a meeting held in Ha Noi on Mar. 7 to review the people-to-people diplomacy work in 2006, Deputy PM Khiem said that 2007 will be a year of economic diplomacy towards bringing Viet Nam out of the list of underdeveloped countries by 2010.

The Deputy PM also said that activities targeting overseas Vietnamese should be further promoted to attract their contributions to Viet Nam's development and also protect the interests of more than 3 million Vietnamese living abroad. Mass organisations should continue promoting the drive to call for supporting Agent Orange/ Dioxin victims.

The meeting, hosted by the Party Central Committee's Commission for External Relations, agreed that people-to-people diplomacy gained a lot of successes in 2006. The Viet Nam Fatherland Front as well as mass organisations actively conducted people-to-people diplomacy activities in bilateral and multilateral ties and in almost all aspects, particularly in socio-political and economic-commercial fields, obtaining important achievements.
