State President celebrates ASEAN's 40th anniversary in US

State President Nguyen Minh Triet attended a celebration of ASEAN's 40th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-US dialogue in Washington D.C. on June 21.

The meeting was co-organised by the embassies of ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and US government departments.

Addressing the function, President Triet stressed that with the theme of an active ASEAN, the anniversary demonstrated the member countries' determination and hopes to build ASEAN into a united bloc and its vital role in solidifying relations between the Southeast Asian region and the Asia-Pacific Region.

The President went on to say that in order to adapt to complicated changes in the region and the world at large, member countries have determined to speed up their cooperation towards the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015 within the framework of the ASEAN Charter, which is expected to be ratified by ASEAN leaders by the end of this year.

ASEAN member countries will promote their relations with external partners for mutual interests and the common goal of peace and stability in the region and the world, he said.

Regarding the ASEAN-US dialogue, President Triet highlighted the US as a long-term and key partner of ASEAN, particularly in trade and investment and its crucial role in keeping stability and peace in the region.

ASEAN member countries attach great importance to fostering both bilateral and multilateral ties with the US , he said.

President Triet said he believed that the upcoming summit to be held in Singapore in September to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-US dialogue relations would prove to be a great success and take the partnership to new heights.

Viet Nam, he said, will continue to make concerted efforts to contribute to the success of the summit and promote ASEAN-US relations.(VNA)
