PM sets off for Indonesia and Philippines visits


Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his wife left Ha Noi on August 8 for his first official visits to Indonesia and the Philippines as Viet Nam’s PM.

The tour to Indonesia will last from August 8-9 and the Philippines from August 9-10 and is made at the inviations of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

It is an ASEAN custom for newly-elected leaders to pay courtesy visits to other member countries.

The visit aims to reiterate Viet Nam’s external policy to boast relations, especially in economics, trade and investment, with neighbouring and regional countries, including Indonesia and the Philippines.

Viet Nam’s relations with Indonesia and the Philippines have enjoyed fine development over the past years both on a bilateral scale and in the regional and international forums.

Two way trade between Viet Nam and Indonesia reached 1.7 billion USD in 2006 while investment from the latter into Viet Nam numbered 13 projects with a combined capital of 137.5 million USD. The two countries are working hard to upgrade their ties into comprehensive strategic partnership.

In regards to the Philippines, Viet Nam posted 1.2 billion USD in bilateral trade in 2006 and received 250 million USD investment via 25 projects.-(VNA)
