Border focus in fatherland ties with Laos

Vientiane (VNA) - The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) and its Lao counterpart have agreed to maintain peace along the common border as a major focus of their 2008 cooperation programme.

The two countries’ biggest mass organisations reached the agreement during a meeting in Lao capital Vientiane on April 21 during a working visit by a VFF delegation led by President Huynh Dam.

The program calls for more regular exchanges and joint projects and has also planned a conference among border-sharing provinces.

During the meeting, the two mass organisations agreed their efforts to build a common border of peace and friendship last year made major progress.

They reported how fatherland fronts of the border-sharing provinces launched campaigns to encourage communities to develop solidarity, strengthen security and maintain peace along the border.

Mutual assistance in personnel training was another point of interest in cooperation. Participants agreed to open training courses for Lao National Construction Front (LNCF) activists with funding and expertise from Vietnam .

LNCF President Sysavat Keobounphan also thanked Vietnam , especially President Nguyen Minh Triet, for their great assistance to his organisation.

Last year, Ho Chi Minh City alone granted the LNCF 5 billion VND and 50,000 USD to support its operations.
