Vietnam supports ASEAN move to assist Myanmar

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem spoke of the importance of ASEAN’s role and supported the bloc building a mechanism to regulate international relief activities in order to help Myanmar victims of Cyclone Nargis.

Deputy PM Khiem also proposed Myanmar take advantage of ASEAN assistance to overcome current difficulties in receiving international relief aid in the aftermath of the disaster at a special ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting called to address emergency relief for the cyclone-hit country.

He supported the immediate dispatch of medical teams from all ASEAN nations to help Myanmar and proposed ASEAN establish a long-term regional disaster relief and management mechanism in the spirit of the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response signed in 2005.

The international aid regulating mechanism put forward at the meeting is the most suitable form to dignify the ASEAN role which was welcomed by both Myanmar and the international community, Khiem said.

“Once the mechanism is well carried out, it will help alleviate part of the difficulties in receiving and transporting international relief aid to devastated areas in Myanma.

Prior to the special ASEAN meeting, Deputy PM Khiem met with the Myanmar Foreign Minister and expressed his sympathy and Vietnam s willingness to help Myanmar.

The Myanmar FM thanked Vietnam for its assistance and welcomed its suggestions.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
