Vietnam supports UNAMID’s full deployment in Darfur
New York (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador Le Luong Minh voiced support for the full and prompt deployment of the joint United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in accordance with the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1769.
Ambassador Minh, who is Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council, chaired a UNSC consultation meeting in New York on July 16.
The UN reported that UNAMID could only deploy 40 percent of their forces in Darfur because of the tensions, the worsening humanitarian situation and the standstill in the political process.
“We encourage the continued cooperation and consultation between UNAMID and the Sudanese Government in the spirit of the Status of Forces Agreement signed on Feb. 9, 2008,” said the Vietnamese diplomat.
Ambassador Minh expressed his deep concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in Darfur while condemning all the attacks on UN staff and peacekeepers.
He went on to say that “We extend our full support to the recent appointment of Mr. Bassole as UN-AU Joint Chief Mediator and believed that he will make substantial contributions to the peace and political process in Darfur .”
The Vietnamese representative also called on the Governments of Chad and Sudan to fully implement the Dakar Agreement and other relevant Agreements, thus contributing to security and stability in Darfur and the subregion. “We firmly support a comprehensive and lasting political solution to the Darfur conflict,” he said.
At a UNSC official meeting, Ambassador Minh read the UNSC President’s statement on the July 8 attack on UNAMID convoy and called on all concerned parties to end violence, take part in political process and fully cooperate in the deployment of UNAMID.
