Quang Tri (VNA) – Central Quang Tri province is the first out of ten provinces sharing the border with Laos to begin a project to add and upgrade border landmarks between Vietnam and Laos .

Construction of the first pair of landmarks, 605-1 and 605-2, at the Lao Bao-Densavane international border gate of Quang Tri and Laos ’s Savannakhet province was launched on July 22.

The landmarks are expected to be completed on September 5.

Quang Tri province shares 206km of borderline with Laos ’s Savannakhet and Salavan provinces. In addition to the Lao Bao-Densavane international border gate, the province also has a national border gate and four secondary border gates.

From 1978 to 1987, Vietnam and Laos completed basic border demarcation and landmark planting on their 2,067km common border.

The two countries decided to plant more and upgrade border landmarks in order to make the borderline management and protection more effectively.

Fifty-nine landmarks are scheduled to be planted from now to the end of 2008.

The 10 localities are the northern mountainous provinces of Dien Bien and Son La, the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum and the central provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam.
