AU appreciates Vietnam’s stance on African issues

New York (VNA) – AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Ramtane Lamamra highly appreciated Vietnam ’s active role and principled stance in resolving African matters, while meeting with Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council Ambassador Le Luong Minh on July 23.

The African Union (AU) Commissioner was exchanging views with Ambassador Minh, who is working as UNSC chairman, on African matters on the agenda for UNSC meetings.

Ambassador Minh affirmed Vietnam’s principled stance regarding peaceful solutions to conflicts in the world in general and in Africa in particular.

He informed the AU representative of a number of important developments in the UNSC’s work relating to African issues and Vietnam’s active contribution to resolving these matters since the country became a UNSC non-permanent member, particularly in July, 2008 when it works as UNSC chairman.

On the situation in Zimbabwe and Somali and the tension between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Sudan, the Vietnamese ambassador said that Vietnam shares the AU’s view over these matters and is ready to cooperate in consultation with the AU for regional matters in order to contribute to UNSC work and seek appropriate solutions to African problems.

The AU representative said that Vietnam’s positive stance on African matters indicated the country’s fine relations with AU member countries.

He also affirmed his hope to cooperate closely with Vietnam in order to promote cooperation between the AU, the UNSC and Vietnam in solving conflicts in the region.
