Vietnam ready to work for disarmament: ambassador

Vietnam will undertake the role of rotating President of the UN Conference on Disarmament (CD) for the 2009 first session.

Geneva (VNA) – The task was assigned at the CD final session for 2008 which took place in Geneva , Switzerland , on September 9.

Speaking at the session, Pham Quoc Tru, Charge d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other international organisations in Geneva , noted that it is an honour for Vietnam to be the first CD President for 2009.

He expressed Vietnam ’s determination to conduct consultations during the break period with all the members states of the Conference with a view to making the best conditions to start the CD’s work next year.

The task will obviously be facilitated by cooperation among all, particularly the Presidents of the 2008 and 2009 sessions, Tru said, adding that the 2009 session of the Conference’s results are up to the common efforts of all CD members.

Therefore, Vietnam calls upon all delegations to approach the 2009 session with an open mind and in a spirit of compromise, flexibility and renewed determination in order to achieve the conference’s objectives, he concluded.

The Conference adopted an annual report to the UN General Assembly at the final session.
