Germany commends Vietnamese, foreign workers
Berlin (VNA) - As many as 200 foreign workers, including 11 Vietnamese, were honoured by Germany on Oct. 1 for their contributions to the European country.
The event marked the first time that Germany has officially glorified the achievements of foreign workers during the past five decades of reconstruction and development.
Speaking at the Federal Integration Forum in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her gratitude to the foreign workforces for their contributions to her country’s construction and development.
The chancellor said she hoped that foreigners who live and work in Germany would integrate well into the local society and teach their younger generations to be fluent in the German language as well as upholding their mother tongues.
The vice president of Wernigerode’s Vietnam-Germany Friendship Association, Huong Trute took this occasion to thank the German Government for their help in training a large number of Vietnamese officials and skilled workers.
She stressed that Vietnamese who have studied and lived in Germany have acted as a bridge for the relationship between the two countries as well as business circles in particular.
Due to labour shortages, the former German Democratic Republic has recruited tens of thousands of foreign workers. The tide of overseas workers reached a peak in 1989, when 94,000 foreigners, of whom 60,000 were from Vietnam, were employed to work there.
