Greek President concludes Vietnam visit

Hanoi (VNA) – Greek President Karolos Papoulias and his wife wrapped up their six-day official visit to Vietnam on Oct. 16 as guests of the State President, Nguyen Minh Triet.

Meeting with President Papoulias, all Vietnamese leaders emphasised that the visit, the first by a head of the Hellenic State , formulated a milestone and created a momentum to boost the bilateral friendship and cooperation to a new height.

The Vietnamese and Greek leaders agreed to further beef up cooperative ties in the years to come, particularly in economy, trade and investment, on the basis of mutual benefits.

In the short-term, Vietnam and Greece will deploy the implementation of the signed deals and agreements and organise activities to promote trade, investment, tourism and culture in a move to increase mutual understating between the people and business circles of the two countries.

Leaders of Vietnam and Greece also discussed concrete areas where the two countries should set up partnership, including shipping transport, tourism and the conservation of historical relics.

President Papoulias asserted that Greece always attaches great importance to strengthening its friendship and cooperation with Vietnam , and that it is willing to become a gateway for Vietnam ’s products to enter Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea regions.

He said the visit has helped him better understand Vietnam , especially the achievements made by the Vietnamese people during the past struggle for national independence and the current process of national construction and development.

The President said he believed that the deployment of agreements reached during his visit and the Greece trip by State President Nguyen Minh Triet in June will contribute to expanding the bilateral friendly and cooperative relationship in the future.

While in Vietnam , President Papoulias paid tribute to the late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum, laid a wreath in memory of the fallen combatants, attended the Vietnam-Greece Business Forum, and visited a number of localities.
