Vietnam highlights UNAMID’s contribution to security in Darfur

New York (VNA) – Vietnam highly appreciates UNAMID’s contributions to improving the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur, especially through its confidence-building patrols, human rights-violation monitoring and capacity building, said Vietnamese Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council on the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in New York on Oct. 28, Ambassador Trung, Vietnamese Deputy Representative to the UN, affirmed Vietnam ’s continued support for the full and prompt deployment of UNAMID.

He said that the tri-partite mechanism between the Sudanese Government, the AU and the UN in UNAMID’s deployment will be more effectively implemented, thereby promoting UNAMID’s full deployment.

Stressing the importance of political solution to the Darfur conflict, the ambassador highly appreciated the UN-AU Joint Chief Mediator’s active engagement in resuming the Darfur political process.

He called on all parties concerned, especially the rebel movements, to demonstrate their political will by joining the political process and the upcoming direct negotiations. He said all regional and international efforts aimed at seeking a comprehensive and lasting political solution to the Darfur conflict must be promoted.

The same day, at a UNSC urgent meeting on the situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ambassador Trung expressed his deep concern about the ongoing fighting in the eastern part of DRC, particularly the danger facing the UN Mission in DRC (MONUC), as well as the alarming humanitarian situation in the region.

He urged all parties concerned, especially armed groups operating in the Kivus to immediately cease all hostilities, fully respect the Actes d’Engagement of the Goma Conference, and strictly implement the Comprehensive Disengagement Plan overseen by MONUC.

About the rising tensions in the DRC-Rwanda relations, the diplomat called on both countries to fully abide by the Nairobi and Goma processes, considering it the sole suitable frameworks for sustainable peace and stability in eastern DRC in particular and the Great Lakes region in general.
