State President to visit Mongolia to strengthen ties
Hanoi (VNA) – President Nguyen Minh Triet will pay an official visit to Mongolia from Oct. 30-31 to increase cooperation between the two nations in a number of areas, paying particular attention to two-way trade and the potential for working together at regional and international forums.
The visit will be made at the invitation of Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar.
Over recent years, the friendship and traditional cooperation between Vietnam and Mongolia has developed steadily.
The two nations renewed their Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation during the visit to Mongolia by President Tran Duc Luong in April 2000.
The two countries also exchanged a number of high-level visits, including the Mongolian visits by the then National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An in January 2003 and ex-Prime Minister Phan Van Khai in April 2004.
The Mongolian leaders, Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar and President Natsagiin Bagabandi made visits to Vietnam in February 2002 and January 2005, respectively.
The Joint Governmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation was established in December 1979.
At the 12th session in Ulan Bator in December 2006, the commission highly appreciated the efforts made by both sides and drew up a series of measures to boost trade-economic ties with the aim of increasing two-way trade turnover to 10 million USD by 2010.
There are currently around 25 Vietnamese companies operating in Mongolia, mainly offering services such as automobile repairs, broker, trading, photography and farming.
The two countries signed an agreement relating to cooperation in education in 2006. As a result, 15 Vietnamese students are now studying in Mongolia and 26 Mongolian students are in Vietnam through governmental scholarships. An additional 17 Mongolian students are studying in Vietnam, financing their own studies.
The two sides plan to continue their close coordination in international activities at regional and international forums.
Mongolia supported Vietnam’s bid to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term, as well as the Executive Council of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the 2010-2013 term.
Vietnam, in turn supported Mongolia in its bid to join the Executive Board of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2010-2013 term and is willing to help the latter to expand its relations with other ASEAN members and to gain access to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), once the organisation admits new members.
