ASEAN nations discuss MP training
HCM City (VNA)- The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) has proposed that the AIPA General Assembly establish joint guidelines regarding the training of members of parliament.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) law makers met in Ho Chi Minh City on Dec. 1-2, calling for stronger cooperation in personnel training with their counterparts from other regions and parliamentarian training agencies from around the world.
Representatives from member state legislatures also stressed the need to adopt a common framework of activities among AIPA personnel training agencies and draw upon a wider range of experiences to effectively prepare for the construction of an ASEAN community incorporating the values of solidarity and development.
AIPA Secretary General Yusoff bin Md. Zain extolled Vietnam’s recommendations regarding the training of MPs as a practical suggestion with numerous concrete applications to further the principle of bloc unity.
Delegations from member nations reached a consensus on measures to encourage the sharing of experiences among AIPA members and adopt standardised approaches to personnel training. They expressed interest in the exchange of up-to-date documents and e-communication tools, as well as the exchange of visits between member parliaments.
They agreed to begin a joint training programme, pending a final decision by the AIPA General Assembly, which is scheduled to be announced in Thailand next August.
Experiences drawn from the scheme would be widely disseminated via the AIPA website, as well as the homepages of member parliaments.
