Vietnam expects more support from IPU

Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has said he hoped that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) would continue to support the Vietnamese legislative body.

Receiving IPU Secretary General Anders B. Johnson in Hanoi on Jan. 10, Chairman Trong thanked the union and the official himself for cooperation with and assistance to Vietnam ’s NA during the past.

As an IPU member since 1979, Vietnam has actively participated in exchange and cooperation activities within the framework of the world’s largest inter-parliamentary forum, the NA Chairman said.

He also spoke highly of IPU’s contributions to the humanity’s democracy, peace, friendship and development processes.

In the context of globalisation, IPU has carried out practical activities to intensify inter-relations between parliaments in the world, he added.

Secretary General Johnson highly appreciated the cooperation between IPU and Vietnam ’s legislative body as well as the latter’s important role in IPU’s activities.

Being one of the 15 members of IPU’s Executive Committee offers Vietnam a good chance to further contribute to the union, he said.

In the context of the current economic and financial crisis, parliament of each country plays an important role in adopting economic policies, according to the IPU Secretary General. Thus, IPU plans to host a meeting for its member parliaments to exchange experience on the issue and propose recommendations to their respective governments, he said.

He also shared views on the role of parliament in every country in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the increase of ODA projects’ transparency and effectiveness.
