President talks live with overseas Vietnamese
“The sentiments and good deeds of Vietnamese expats towards the home land proved that they are an integral part and a resource of the Vietnamese community,” he said.
He extolled the overseas Vietnamese people’s efforts in labour and study to make fame for the country. He added that many of them have returned to the homeland to make contributions in various fields such as science, economy, education and culture. Overseas Vietnamese also actively take part in charitable and humanitarian activities to help the country overcome difficulties caused by natural calamities and epidemics, the President said.
He expressed hope that in the context of the global economic fluctuations, Vietnamese people inside and outside the country would exert joint efforts to develop the country into a strong one in the region.
He also said the exemption of entry and exit visa for overseas Vietnamese and especially the National Assembly’s ratification of the amended Law on Nationality to allow Vietnamese residing abroad to retain Vietnamese citizenship, have met the aspirations of the overseas Vietnamese community.
Beside Hanoi , the live show also presented the daily life of overseas Vietnamese in Vientiane , Moscow and San Francisco as well as other parts of the world, picturing hard-working days of those in Eastern Europe and young people’s Vietnamese language learning.
Nguyen Van Nghia, an overseas Vietnamese in Australia , said he wished his descendants can maintain the fatherland’s customs, which he thought is their origin.
Huong Robson, who is living in the US , said she was proud of Vietnam ’s improved position in the international arena, especially since the country has assumed the role of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Sharing views with Huong, Tony Lam, also in the US , said that Vietnam ’s development is an important factor to attract second-generation overseas Vietnamese to return and contribute to the country.
The live TV programme was jointly organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (SCOV) under the Foreign Ministry and the Vietnam Television.
