Vietnam, China celebrate completion of border demarcation scheme
The State-level ceremony, held at the Huu Nghi (Friendship) international border gate in northern Lang Son province (known as Youyiguan border gate in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, and the Chinese Party Central Committee member and State Councillor, Dai Bingguo.
Addressing the event, Deputy PM Khiem stressed that the two countries, through considerable efforts, had finally settled an issue bequeathed by history.
He described the completion of the border demarcation and the execution of the two countries’ Land Border Treaty as conducive to the peace and stability of the border area, creating the right conditions for the development of each country, particularly their bordering regions, thus contributing to the peace, stability and development of the whole region.
He also said the event provides vivid evidence of the two countries’ comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership and broadcasts an important message to the world, saying that the cooperation between the two neighbouring countries is developing soundly.
Chinese State Councillor Dai stressed that the Chinese Party and Government attach importance to the bilateral relationship and would, alongside the Vietnamese Party and Government, transform the border into a connection characterised by peace, cooperation and development.
Following the ceremony, Khiem held discussions with Chinese State Councillor Dai, where the two sides praised the completion of the border demarcation scheme and described it as an event of great significance to bilateral relations.
They pledged to further this cooperation through the signing of a protocol on border demarcation, a treaty on border management regulations and other relevant documents in 2009, in order to bring the Land Border Treaty to life.
They also agreed to work together to overcome the fallout from the global economic situation in each country.
They reached unanimity on convening the third session of the Vietnam-China Bilateral Cooperation Steering Committee in Hanoi in mid-March.
On behalf of the Chinese Government and the Boao Forum for Asia, Dai reiterated an invitation to the Vietnamese PM, Nguyen Tan Dung, to visit China and attend the forum.
On this occasion, Khiem conveyed the Vietnamese Government’s sympathies to the Chinese government and families of the victims of a coal mine blast that occurred in Shanxi province on Feb. 22./.
