Viet Kieu to attend Con Dao memorial

Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son made the announcement at a press briefing in Hanoi on April 14, emphasising that the programme was aimed at enriching the historic knowledge of the younger generations, including overseas Vietnamese.
Its other objectives is to feature the historic islands’ as a tourist attraction and ideal investment destination, added Son, who is also Chairman of the State Committee on Overseas Vietnamese.
The programme will include a mass held by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha to pay tribute to ex-revolutionaries killed at the former barbarous prison built by French colonialists to hold opponents and lasted until the US-backed Saigon regime. As many as 400 Buddhist monks, nuns and followers are expected to pray for peace for the souls of war martyrs at the event.
An art programme, themed “Legendary Con Dao,” that includes the screening of a documentary on the island prison, will draw major names from the domestic art circle and overseas Vietnamese./.
