Vietnam calls on Israel to cease violence and blockade of Gaza

VNA 03/11/2009 - Vietnam has called on Israel to stop its violent actions and end the blockade of the Gaza Strip as well as taking international conventions on human rights and humanity seriously.

The Vietnamese Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung, made the appeal at a Nov. 2 debate of the 64th United Nations General Assembly’s Special Committee on Decolonisation, which discussed the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

On addressing the event, Ambassador Trung applauded the UNRWA’s efforts to carry out relief programmes for Palestinian refugees.

He expressed concern over the agency’s difficulties in sourcing funds as well as their working conditions and the humanitarian activities they are focusing on in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

He also urged Israel to ensure the safety of UNRWA staff and give them the necessary conditions so they can execute their mission.

In 2009, Vietnam contributed 200,000 USD to the UNRWA fund./.
