Vietnam vows to back UN system coherence
VNA 05/02/2010 - Vietnam will actively contribute to the upcoming discussions of the United Nations General Assembly on the issue of system-wide coherence, said Ambassador Bui The Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative for Vietnam.
Speaking at the General Assembly’s informal meeting covering the issue in New York on Feb. 4, Ambassador Giang reiterated that the combination of the executive summary presented to Member States by the former Co-Chairs on June 19 last year and the proposals and recommendations presented by the Secretary-General in his reports will serve as a good basis for the ongoing discussions to move ahead during this General Assembly session.
The summary included suggestions on a possible way forward regarding major issues including the strengthening of support for gender equality, governance of operational activities for development, and the funding system.
The ambassador underlined that in order for the discussions to result in consensus, there must be a greater level of transparency, openness, inclusiveness and interaction as well as an integrated approach in the UN’s overall work.
He reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for the establishment of a composite entity to take charge of the existing mandates entrusted to the four current groups on gender issues within the UN system.
Vietnam will proactively and constructively engage in all issues related to system-wide coherence, and work actively with all other delegations on this important issue, Giang said.
In this connection, he added that Vietnam will do its utmost to ensure the successful organisation and conclusion of the Hanoi Conference on the pilot One United Nations programme this June./.
