Remarks by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh at AMM (8th November 2017, Da Nang City).

Distinguished colleagues, a very good morning.

1. Welcome to Da Nang, Viet Nam and to the 29th APEC Ministerial Meeting.

2. Since our 28th AMM last year in Lima, the journey we have taken over the past year has been filled with rapid and complex developments.  The global and regional landscapes are experiencing continued shifts with intertwining opportunities and challenges.

Economic recovery is firming but projected growth rates are still below pre-crisis averages. The Fourth Industrial Revolution have created hopes for higher productivity, but also anxiety about its transformative implications.

International cooperation and integration endeavors continue to be reinforced. But threats posed by regional tensions, terrorism, inequality, natural disasters and cyber security are becoming more acute.

3. This past year has once again proved APEC’s incredible ability to adapt, to transform and to lead. APEC continues to help ensure our Asia-Pacific as an engine of global economic growth and integration for the benefit of our people and businesses.

4. We have set “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future” as our aim for this year. We have been focusing our efforts to consolidate the momentum of APEC cooperation, and advance the four priorities. They are:

(i) promoting sustainable, innovative and inclusive growth,

(ii)  deepening regional economic integration, (iii) strengthening the competiveness of MSMEs, and

(iv) enhancing food security and sustainable agriculture.

With the hard work and effective cooperation, our officials, business and stakeholders, the 9 ministerial - level meetings and dialogues and over 200 committee and sub-fora meetings organized this year have produced concrete results and deliverables.

5. Against such backdrop, our meeting today has three main objectives:

-  First, to review the work of APEC processes this year.

- Second, to finalize preparations for our Economic Leaders’ Meeting in the next two days.

- Third, to decide on ways to push forward cooperation in some major areas.

6. I have no doubt that your wisdom and commitment are indispensable to ensure fruitful outcomes for this meeting.

With that, I would pass the floor to my Co-Chair, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Minister of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam, to make further remarks.
