Preparations on track for UN Buddhism celebrations
The IOC is planning to hold a landmark Buddhist concert, the first ever played on Vesak Day.
Celebrations for Buddhism’s holiest day will also feature trade fairs, visits to major Buddhist relics sites in the northern provinces of Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh provinces and sight-seeing on the UNESCO-recognised World Heritage site Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh.
Rituals on driving flora-decorated vehicles, releasing lanterns into waters and lighting candles will also be held on this occasion.
According to Bui Huu Duoc, Buddhist Affairs Department Head under the Governmental Committee for Religious Affairs, although Viet Nam has little experience in hosting such a grand celebration, he is confident of the success of the event based on overwhelming support from the public and local administrations.
IOC General Secretary, Superior Bonze Thich Nhat Tu, said preparations for the event are faring well and entering the final stage.
So far, 600 delegations with 1,500 members from 95 countries and territories have registered to participate.
