Japan to support Vietnam’s nuclear power project

Japan will support Vietnam in carrying out an atomic energy strategy and developing its first nuclear power plant project scheduled to operate by 2020.

An agreement to this effect was signed by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Huu Hao and the Japanese Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Masashi Nakano, in Hanoi on May 15.

Under the agreement, Japan will assist Vietnam in preparing for and implementing the nuclear energy programme, developing human resources for the planned nuclear power plant and formulating nuclear power regulations.

Exchange of visits, information sharing and seminar and exhibition organisation will be conducted as part of the cooperation progamme.

The Japanese government and business sector have assisted Vietnam in performing overall surveys on atomic power use in the country, research on boiling water reactor (BWR) and pressurised water reactor (PWR) as well as a feasibility study on the nuclear power project.

Japan has also helped Vietnam draft an Atomic Power Law that is expected to be discussed and adopted at the National Assembly’s ongoing session in a move to create legal foundation for the construction of the plant.

An investment report for the power plant is expected to be complete before the end of 2008 and be submitted to the NA for approval in 2009.

Plant construction is slated for 2012-2014 in the central province of Ninh Thuan . The first generator of the nuclear power plant would then be put into operation by 2020 in order to supply an additional 11,000 MW of nuclear power to the national electricity grid by 2025.
