UK continues annual grant of 100 mln USD to Vietnam
Hanoi (VNA) – The UK’s Government will continue to annually provide a package of non-refundable aid of about 100 million USD (50 million British pounds) to Vietnam from now to 2011.
The decision was made public by the Department for International Development (DFID) on May 20 in Hanoi .
Under the Country Assistance Plan for Vietnam, the DFID will focus on three areas including ensuring continued strong economic growth and opportunities for the poor as Vietnam integrates into the global economy, improving the quality and inclusiveness of basic services for the poor, and promoting effective and accountable governance.
“The Plan demonstrates the UK’s continuous commitment to Vietnam, aiming to help the country meet all Millennium Development Goals,” Head of the DFID Vietnam Donal Brown said.
“Over the past 10 years, Vietnam has had the strongest poverty reduction of any country in the world and a strong economy, and those results do speak for themselves,” Brown said, showing his support of the Vietnamese government’s capable leadership.
The British government, through the DFID, has funded projects in Vietnam since 1992 with a total spending of approximately 498 million USD. The size of the programme has steadily increased from around 31.6 million USD in 2001 to roughly 100 million USD per year for the last two years.
