Deputy PM urges to focus on poverty reduction in 60 poorest districts

VGP - To fulfill the set target of poverty reduction and fruitfully carry out the program on sustainable poverty alleviation in 60 poorest urban districts nationwide, it is necessary to invest in four key sectors: infrastructure, production and business conditions, education-science and technology, and personnel policies, emphasized Standing Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng.
The Deputy PM made the statement at the July 07 meeting of the Government’s Steering Broad for the National Goal Program on Poverty Reduction in the period of 2006-10.
According to a report presented by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), by early 2007, there remained 60 urban districts in 19 provinces having the poverty rates of over 50%.
Leaders of MoLISA revealed that the Ministry is drafting a program on sustainable poverty reduction in poor urban districts in the period of 2009-15. The program aims at lowering poor households in these localities down to below 30% and 15% in 2010 and in 2015 respectively; building essential facilities for production and livelihood in all communes; and ensuring 1.5-time increase of income for ethnic minority households.
Presiding over the meeting, Deputy PM Hùng urged to review and assess the implementation of poverty reduction programs with a view to seeking for concrete solutions and specific mechanisms for different localities. He also emphasized that taking care of the poor is among the Government’s top priorities. The improvement of material and spiritual life for the poor and narrowing the rich-poor gap are not only the mission of the State and Government but also of the whole people, he said.
The leader ordered the 19 provinces to assess the realization of poverty reduction programs carried out in each of those poorest districts. Last but not least, he agreed to found a MoLISA-led task force in charge of designing the program on sustainable poverty reduction.
