Vietnam, Brazil seeks opportunities to increase trade turnover

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and Brazil should create and grasp at opportunities for cooperation to realise their target of 1 billion USD in trade turnover by 2010.

The idea was shared by both the visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Vietnamese host, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, at a seminar on the two countries’ partnership development in Hanoi on July 10.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva said the participation of more than 30 representatives from leading Brazilian businesses in his delegation was an evidence of their special interest in relations with Vietnam , particularly in trade, agriculture and energy.

He appreciated the two countries’ efforts to increase the two-way trade turnover to 323 million USD in 2007 from 43 million USD in 2002.
Deputy PM Hai highlighted the achievements the Brazilian people have gained over the recent years to become the biggest Latin American economy.

He asserted the two countries have made positive developments in cooperation since they established diplomatic ties in 1989.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM stressed that the two economies share similarities and can assist each other to develop, particularly in agriculture and energy.

However, he said, the two sides have not yet fully tapped their potentials, citing that Brazil stands 65th among investors in Vietnam with a single project capitalised at 2.6 million USD.

He expressed his belief that the two governments would create a legal framework to facilitate the two nations’ enterprises to develop cooperation.

The seminar, co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Brazilian Embassy, drew the participation of 78 Vietnamese businesses and 16 Brazilian counterparts, specialising in trade, finance-banking and energy.
