JICA helps build roadside station

Hanoi (VNA) – Construction of a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded roadside station in the northern Bac Giang province began on July 14.

The Bac Giang station is located in Song Khe commune, Yen Dung district, 120km along National Highway No. 1A. It is expected to open in January next year.

The station is being piloted as a facility for rest, public information and promoting local specialties. If successful, it will become a model for roadside stations in Vietnam.

The pilot project is a component of the Study on National Roadside Stations Master Plan in Vietnam, which started in February, 2007.

While construction of the roadside station is underway, JICA will train local authorities and core staff in the operation and management of the station and provide support when it first opens.

JICA says it hopes the project will assist Vietnam Road Administration in finalising the legal framework for roadside stations and including stations in road infrastructure and the development of road law and administration mechanisms.

Prior to the Bac Giang station, ground was broken for the construction of two other roadside stations in Ninh Binh and Hoa Binh provinces in April, 2008. The two stations are expectedly to operate from August, 2008.

Vietnam’s Mai Linh Group has also invested in building several roadside stations, including one in Binh Thuan province and another in Tien Giang province. The two stations have started their operations.
