Vietnamese and Lao provinces step up cooperation

Vietnam ’s Mekong delta An Giang province and Laos’ southwestern Champasak province have agreed to foster their bilateral relations, particularly in economics.

An Giang (VNA) – The agreement was reached during a meeting between Chairman of the An Giang Province People’s Committee Lam Minh Chieu and his Champasak counterpart Sonsay Siphadon in An Giang province on August 30.

Chieu said the special solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Laos have created favourable conditions for the two provinces to push up their multifaceted cooperation.

An Giang and Champasak have many similarities, including advantage in agricultural development and convenient geographical conditions for promoting waterway transport and tourism.

As part of cooperation programmes between the two localities, the An Giang University is providing full scholarships in agriculture for five students from Champasak.

An Giang has organised short training courses on rice cultivation, husbandry and catfish rearing for Champasak’s technicians and farmers and sent experts to the Lao province to help local farmers in preventing rice diseases.

For its part, Champasak province has assigned 1,000 ha of land for An Giang to raise cows and grow industrial plants.

The two sides have also agreed to increase cultural exchange and assist each other in training personnel and transferring technology in agro-forestry production.

An Giang is going to send experts to Champasak to help the latter organise the upcoming 8 th national sports competition.
