Vietnam, UK place education cooperation top
Vietnam and the UK agreed to give top priority to education and training in their bilateral cooperation.
Hanoi (VNA) – The agreement was reached by Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem and visiting Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the UK , in Hanoi on Sept. 8.
In the field, the two countries need to immediately deploy an education and training cooperation agreement signed by the two governments in a detailed and effective manner, they stressed.
Prince Andrew highly valued the Vietnamese Government’s grant of a license for the establishment of University Apollo in Vietnam , proving Vietnam ’s goodwill and desire to elevate bilateral cooperation in education and training.
Deputy PM Khiem meanwhile affirmed, “ Vietnam places importance to developing cooperation with the UK , particularly in education-training and trade-investment.”
The Vietnamese government leader pledged to provide British investors with the best conditions to expand business in Vietnam for the sake of both sides.
The UK has become Vietnam ’s leading economic partner with the two countries trading almost 2 billion USD in 2007.
The European country has pumped about 1.4 billion USD in FDI in Vietnam , mainly in oil and gas, finance, banking and telecommunications. Its leading giants as BP, Rolls Royce, Prudential, HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank and Vodafone, have been present and doing well in the Southeast Asian country.
Prince Andrew also appreciated the Vietnamese Government’s grant of licenses for the HSBC and Standard Chartered banks to establish their wholly owned banks in Vietnam .
However, Prince Andrew and Deputy PM Khiem shared the view that trade and investment between the two countries have not yet tapped their potential despite positive developments recorded in the field.
Prince Andrew vowed he, as the UK Government’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, will continue backing Vietnam ’s efforts to increate trade and investment with the UK .
He pledged to encourage British investors to do business in Vietnam and offer more favourable conditions for Vietnamese businesses and commodities to penetrate into the British market.
Prince Andrew has been in Hanoi from September 6 for the 35 th anniversary of Vietnam-UK diplomatic ties.
Prince Andrew will fly to Ho Chi Minh City where he will meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and HCM City Mayor Le Hoang Quan on September 9 before leaving on September 10.
This is Prince Andrew’s third visit to Vietnam , with the two previous ones he made in 1999 and 2006.
Vietnam and the UK are enjoying growing cooperation in politics, trade, investment, cooperation for development, education and training.
