Vietnam welcomes peace process in Burundi

Vietnam welcomes the signing of the joint Declaration on the Cessation of Hostilities between the Burundi Government and the Palipehutu - National Forces of Liberation (FNL) - and their dialogue to seek measures for the implementation of the Comprehensive Ceasefire Agreement.

Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security Council Ambassador Le Luong Minh made the statement at a UNSC meeting on Burundi situation held in New York on August 26.

He urged the parties concerned to engage fully in constructive political dialogue, adhere to the principles of the Constitution and promote the spirit of national reconciliation in the run-up to the 2010 national elections.

The Vietnamese representative, however, voiced his concern about the existing obstacles to the peace process in Burundi, especially the violence targeting civilians and the staff of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).

The diplomat affirmed Vietnam’s full support for BINUB’s role and its assistance to Burundi in facilitating the peace process, political stabilisation and humanitarian activities.

Ambassador Minh also encouraged the Peace building Commission in Burundi (PBC)'s assistance to Burundi in promoting socio-economic development and reconstruction with a view to ensuring long-lasting peace and stability in Burundi and the Great Lake’s region at large.(VNA/VOVNews)
