Vietnam hails pact between Zimbabwe parties
Vietnam welcomed the signing of the power-sharing agreement between the Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
New York (VNA) – Permanent Representative of Vietnam to United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Ambassador Le Luong Minh made the remark at the UNSC’s debate on Zimbabwe in New York on Sept. 19.
The diplomat called on all parties to fully implement the agreement in good faith, thereby restoring peace and stability, and improving the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe .
He commended the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU) and South African President Thabo M'beki for their successful mediation efforts.
“The success of their mediation and the experience of Zimbabwe once again underline the paramount importance of peaceful solution of disputes and conflicts, including by means of mediation with the regional organisations taking a leading role,” Minh said.
The ambassador urged the international community and the humanitarian NGOs to extend necessary assistance to Zimbabwe to help it stabilise the political situation and overcome the current socio-economic difficulties.
“We call upon all Zimbabwean parties, at this critical juncture and in the face of a valuable opportunity, to put the interests of the Zimbabwean people above all, work with close cooperation and coordination with UN agencies, especially the UNDP, to work out effective development plans with a view to bringing the country out of the present socio-economic crisis and ushering in a new stage, that of peace, reconciliation, political stability and socio-economic development for Zimbabwe, contributing to those of the region,” he concluded.
