News on Consular Protection of Vietnamese Citizen – April 12, 2017
On April 12, 2017, representative of the Embassy of Vietnam in Malaysia and Malaysian lawyer Hisyam The Poh Teik made a consular visit to Doan Thi Huong who was in custody as a suspect in the murder case of a Korean national. Huong was in stable health.
Earlier, leader of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam met with their Malaysian counterpart and the Deputy Director General of the Consular Department met with the Deputy Chief of Malaysian Mission in Hanoi on April 6 and April 11 respectively. During those meetings, the Vietnamese side asked the Malaysian side to ensure a fair, unbias legal process for Doan Thi Huong as well as to preserve her legitimate rights in line with Malaysian law and international practice.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy will continue to work with Vietnam Bar Federation to follow the case closely and to promptly provide necessary legal assist to protect her legitimate rights.
