The Government of Vietnam does not discriminate or punish the returnees for illegal border crossing

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 15th MARCH 2005

Question: Please provide information about the first Vietnamese refugees returning from Cambodia? Will they be prosecuted for illegal border crossing and national security violation under the Vietnamese law?

Answer:

As far as we know, on 11th March 2005, Gia Lai authorities received 9 Central Highlands ethnic minority people who had illegally crossed the border into Cambodia and now voluntarily returned to Vietnam under an MOU signed by Vietnam-Cambodia-UNHCR on 25th January 2005.

The Government of Vietnam does not discriminate or punish the returnees for illegal border crossing. Local authorities will help those people soon stabilize their lives and integrate into the community./.
