Vietnam possesses sufficient historical evidences and legal foundations to assert its indisputable sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos

THE SPOKESMAN OF MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS LE DZUNG

ANSWERS QUESTION ON 11 APRIL 2007

Question : Please advise Vietnam’s reaction to the remarks by Chinese Foreign Ministry ‘s spokesman protesting Vietnam’s concession, bidding invitations and its cooperation with British Petrolium to build a gas pipeline in Truong Sa archipelagos?

Answer :

Vietnam possesses sufficient historical evidences and legal foundations to assert its indisputable sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.

All activities conducted by Vietnam on its archipelagos and sea waters including concessions, gas exploration and exploitation are absolutely normal activities, in comformity with Vietnamese laws, international laws and practices, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the spirit of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the Eastern Sea.

The Project between Vietnam Petrolium and British Petrolium, realized since 2000, is located in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf which are entirely within Vietnam’s sovereignty rights.
