Concerning US second circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the petition by Vietnamese Agent Orange victims against US chemical companies for using Agent Orange/dioxin during the Vietnam War

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS' SPOKESMAN MR. LE DZUNG
ANSWERS QUESTION ON  FEBRUARY 23, 2008

Question: Please provide  Vietnam’s comments on the news that on February 22, the US  second circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the petition by Vietnamese Agent Orange victims against US chemical companies for using Agent Orange/dioxin during the Vietnam War?

Answer:

The February 22 erroneous and unfair verdict of the United States second circuit Court of Appeals has been provoking indignation among the Vietnamese people. This verdict denied the truth that the Agent Orange/Dioxin used by the US army during the Vietnam war has caused severe consequences to humans and environment in Vietnam, which has been confirmed in many research projects done by international scientists, including American researchers. Regrettably, the United States second circuit Court of Appeals delivered this verdict while the US government is making efforts in cooperating with Viet Nam to resolve the consequences caused by Agent Orange/dioxin.

Resolving the consequences of Agent Orange/Dioxin is an extremely urgent humanitarian issue. Almost 40 years have elapsed since the end of the war, but these consequences still profoundly affect the socio-economic life in Vietnam. Millions of Vietnamese Agent Orange/dioxin victims suffer daily physical and mental pains. The US companies producing AO/dioxin should acknowledge their responsibility, make practical contribution to addressing the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin and fulfil their legal, spiritual and moral obligations for not only US veterans but also Vietnamese victims.

The demands of Vietnamese Agent Orange/dioxin victims are fully legitimate. We are confident that the international community, including many US individuals and organizations, will continue to stand side by side with the Vietnamese Agent Orange/dioxin victims in this struggle for justice.
