What has happened in Con Dau absolutely has nothing to do with religion

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS' SPOKESPERSON MRS. NGUYEN PHUONG NGA
ANSWERS QUESTION ON 31st AUGUST 2010

Question: As far as the Vietnamese governemt knows, have any villagers form Con Dau left the country and traveled to Thailand? If any Vietnamese from Con Dau have applied for political asylum to UNHCR, does Vietnam think UNHCR should deny such a request?

Answer:

We learnt of the statement by a UNHCR spokesman in the press, but have not yet received any official information from UNHCR on this.

We have made it clear earlier that what has happened in Con Dau absolutely has nothing to do with religion.

There exists no religious and political suppression in Vietnam. Any decision to grant political asylum status to Vietnamese citizens will therefore be groundless and inappropriate.
