The 5th Regular Press Conference in 2018


I. ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to pay an official visit to Singapore and attend the 32nd ASEAN Summit (25 – 28 April 2018)

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of Singapore H.E. Lee Hsien-loong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Spouse will pay an official visit to Singapore and attend the 32nd ASEAN Summit from 25 to 28 April 2018.

This is the first official visit to Singapore by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in his capacity as Prime Minister, as the two countries celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1 August 1973 – 1 August 2018) and the 5th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership (September 2013 – September 2018). The two sides shall discuss ways to further strengthen the bilateral relations and create new breakthroughs in bilateral cooperation, and discuss a number of regional and international issues of common interest. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will hold talks with Prime Minister Lee Hsien-loong, meet with the President of Singapore, speak at the Singaporean Institute of Management, attend the Viet Nam – Singapore Business Forum, and visit Singaporean economic facilities.

Following this official visit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will attend the 32nd ASEAN Summit in Singapore. This is the first Summit in 2018 under the ASEAN chairmanship of Singapore. Under the theme “Resilient and Innovative”, ASEAN leaders will discuss ways to advance cooperation and strengthen integration in order to enhance ASEAN resilience in response to challenges, and promote innovation-based development through realizing new opportunities brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution; thus contributing to the building of an united, strong and sustainably-developing ASEAN Community. During the Summit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will also hold talks with leaders of ASEAN countries.

2. Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh to attend the 2018 Global Summit of Women (23-28 April 2018)

At the invitation of the President of the Global Summit of Women Irene Natividad, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend the Global Summit of Women and perform other activities in Australia from 23 to 28 April 2018.

The Meeting this year is held under the theme of “Creating Economies of Shared Values”, stressing the importance of globalization, inclusive growth and the expansion of economic links, in which the role and contribution of women are advanced. The Global Summit of Women is an important forum to promote gender equality and economic empowerment for women, create opportunities for integration, expand cooperation, and uphold the role of women in the economy of each country and the world at large.

It is expected that Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh will deliver a remark at the Opening Session of the Meeting, meet with leaders of countries attending the Meeting and leaders of Australia as well of Victoria and New South Wales, visit a number of economic and educational facilities, and meet the representatives of the Vietnamese diaspora, student organizations and businesses in Australia.

3. State Counselor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Viet Nam (19-20 April 2018) 

At the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the State Counselor, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the President's Office of Myanmar H.E. Aung San Suu Kyi will pay an official visit to Viet Nam from 19 to 20 April 2018. This is her first official visit to Viet Nam.

The visit takes place as Viet Nam – Myanmar relations have been developing in various areas, in particular following the establishment of Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership on the occasion of the State visit to Myanmar by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in August 2017. The two sides will discuss measures to promote bilateral cooperation in particular in areas of great potential such as trade, investment, transport, agriculture and forestry, telecommunication and banking. The visit is also an occasion for the two sides to discuss regional and international issues of common interest.

It is expected that State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi will hold talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, pay a courtesy call to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, meet the Viet Nam – Myanmar Friendship Association and Vietnamese businesses, and visit cultural sites in Hanoi.

II. Q&A

1. What is your comment on the upcoming Summit between the ROK andthe DPRK on 27thof April 2018?

Vietnam welcomes the Summit scheduled for 27th April 2018 between the ROK and the DPRK to promote dialogue and to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

2. What is Vietnam's reaction to the US President Donald Trump’s comment on potential participation inCPTPP?

The Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is an open agreement to which other economies could join after CPTPP comes into force on the basis ofaccepting high standards of the agreement and consensus among member states.

3. Could you update on the case of a Vietnamese woman committing suicide in the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia? Do you have any further information on the investigation?

Regarding the case of Ms. TrầnThị Mai, we have said before.The Malaysian police has been in the process of investigating the case.The Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia hadbeen assisting Ms. Tran Thi Mai’s family, working with the Vietnamese community to raise funds for post-death procedures and remainsrepatriation. On April 6, 2018, her remains was repatriated to Vietnam as the family had been desired.

4. China recently held military exercisesin the East Sea. The Philippines media also reported that China aircrafts took off and landed on Mischief Reef. What is your comment on these developments?

Vietnam has sovereignty over Spratly and Paracel islands in accordance with international law as well as sovereign rights and jurisdiction over maritime zones established in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982.The stance of Vietnam has been clear and consistent; we expect other countries to contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and over-flight in the East Sea./.
