Deputy PM hard at work on UN sidelines

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem had a number of meetings on Sept. 29 with leaders of the United Nations, and a number of ASEAN and EU member states to discuss cooperation and issues of common concern on the sidelines of the 63 rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York .
New York (VNA) – He joined his counterparts from other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (IAMM) to discuss the preparations for the 14 th ASEAN Summit and related conferences that are slated to take place in Thailand from Dec. 15-18.

They also gave their opinions on the continuation of preparations for the ASEAN Charter, which is due to come into force, plus the reform of the ASEAN Secretariat.

Khiem, along with other ASEAN FMs met with the UN Secretary General and the President of the 63 rd UN General Assembly session to examine ways to increase cooperation between ASEAN countries and other UN member nations, particularly in coping with natural disasters and issues relating to food security.

The two sides agreed to accelerate the implementation of a memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN-UN partnership signed in 2007 and to hold the third ASEAN-UN Summit to coincide with the 14 th ASEAN Summit in order to speed up bilateral cooperation.

Also on Sept. 29, Deputy PM Khiem spoke with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The two officials expressed their mutual satisfaction regarding the progress of the relationship enjoyed by the two countries over recent years.

They agreed to further cooperation, firstly by implementing the two sides’ agreements on economic, educational and scientific-technological fields and continuing negotiations to erase differences on issues related to human rights and religion.

Deputy PM Khiem also held meetings with heads of foreign delegations and international organisations, including the Vice President of the Cuban State Council, the Iraqi President, the Nepali and Dutch PMs, FMs from France, Greece, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Syria, the Deputy FM from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Chairman of the UN Development Group (UNDG) and the EU Commissioner for External Affairs.

In their conversations, the foreign leaders expressed their wishes to further cooperation with Vietnam and made concrete suggestions to increase cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, investment and tourism.

UNDG Chairman Kemal Dervis, who is also the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, extolled Vietnam ’s implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and the “One UN” initiative.

He also praised Vietnam ’s cooperation with other countries, including the sharing of experiences in the implementation of MDGs. He went on to pledge to further assist Vietnam in policy consultancy for sustainable development and to cooperate with the country in coping with issues of climate change and difficulties in the implementation of MDGs.

Deputy PM Khiem left New York late on Sept. 29, concluding his week-long working visit.
