Vietnam welcomes UN’s commitment to protect Congolese

New York (VNA) – Vietnam welcomes commitment made by the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) that prioritises protection of civilians, said a Vietnamese diplomat.

At a UN Security Council meeting on Oct. 3, Vietnam Permanent Representative to the organisation, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, affirmed Vietnam ’s support for MONUC in implementing its missions in accordance with the UNSC’s related resolutions.

MONUC should respond more actively to the Congolese people’s needs and work closer with the local government and other humanitarian organisations to better its performance in the country, Minh said.

The Vietnamese diplomat also expressed deep concern about the seriousness of continuing fighting in east Congo since some rebel groups resumed violence acts in August.

He called upon related parties, especially rebel groups, to strictly follow fire-ceasing agreement, noting that more attention should be paid to disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of arm forces in the country.

The ambassador also welcomed the rebels’ commitment to implementing MONUC’s isolation plan, calling international agencies to provide necessary resources for the plan’s full implementation.
