VN, Belgium to improve co-operative partnership

HA NOI — Viet Nam has always attached importance to developing relations with Belgium, National Assembly chairman Nguyen Phu Trong told visiting President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives Patrick Dewael.

Speaking with his guest at a reception in the capital city yesterday, Trong said the National Assembly would work with the Government and people to boost the bilateral relations.

Trong welcomed President Patrick to Viet Nam, believing the visit would strengthen the two sides' multi-faceted relations.

Trong said the visit, the first for a President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives since 1998, had taken place at a time when the two countries' relations were experiencing progressive development in various sectors.

He asked the two sides to strengthen the exchange of parliamentary delegations. By so doing, he said mutual understanding between the two countries would be deepened.

President Patrick agreed with Trong that it was essential to strengthen the exchange of visits between the two legislative bodies.

He said the two countries and national assemblies would co-ordinate more closely at multilateral forums.

Viet Nam and Belgium would strengthen their relations and support each other to speed up ties between Viet Nam and EU, Belgium-ASEAN and ASEAN-EU in the context of Viet Nam's role as the chair of ASEAN and AIPA 2010, while Belgium would continue its role as the EU chair for the last six months of this year, he said.

Being a strong supporter of Belgian enterprises to invest in Viet Nam, Patrick said he was delighted to see a significant number of Belgian investors running effective business, thereby contributing to the development of Viet Nam.

He said Belgium would continue providing official development assistance to Viet Nam because the country had attained Belgium's priority norms as a recipient of the fund.

Trong thanked the Belgian Government for its support.

The two also discussed issues of common concern including the role and participation of Vietnamese women in politics, poverty alleviation, and the commutation of death sentences.—VNS
