A FEW PANAMANIAN WITNESSES
1/ Professor Thomas Luther Panameño, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Panama (now The Peopele Party of Panama) said he had met Ho Chi Minh at hotel of the Communist Party of Russia (the
former Soviet Union).
Ho Chi Minh asked if Mr. Thomas Panameño was from Africa. The latter replied that he was not from Africa, but from Panama. Ho Chi Minh said he had thought that in Panama there were no black people.
Thus, Professor Thomas Luther Panameño may be a first Panamanian to meet Ho Chi Minh who later became President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
2 / Mr. Carlos J. L. Nuñez, a journalist, former executive secretary of the Panama Committee in Solidarity with Vietnamese People during the war against the U.S. He told us: "The image of Uncle Ho is always so dear, so close and respectful for Panamanian students, farmers, workers and professionals."
On 9 January 1964, amid the patriotic struggle against the presence of the U.S. colonialists in Panama, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) of which Ho Chi Minh was President, sent a message expressing solidarity with the Panamanian people against the slaughter of America.
It is also worth emphasizing that some time around 1978 - 1979, Premier Pham Van Dong visited Panama at the invitation of General Omar Torrijos and one of the agreements signed by the two leaders was Vietnam was the first State to sign the Protocol recognizing the neutrality of the Panama Canal. This helped General Omar Torrijos find a balance in the world to respect neutrality of the Panama Canal, and in this manner, Panama is no longer under the auspices and protection of the Pentagon, U.S.
Mr. Nuñez said: "I always believe that, Uncle Ho, as a young man, could have gone through the Panama Canal on a ship carrying French flag.
I visited Vietnam on two occasions through the auspices of the Council for the Defence of National Sovereignty and Peace (CONADESOPAZ) of which I was Executive Secretary and I was a member of the Committee for Protection of World Peace. The Vietnam Peace Committee invited us to visit Vietnam.
Twice in Hanoi, I was honored to visit Uncle Ho's stilt houses; here there is a large fish pond with hundreds and hundreds of colorful carps. The guide told us that during his life time, Uncle Ho used to come here, call the fish and feed them directly from his hands. That was his biggest joy, and so He could contact the roots of humanity..."
