Vietnam’s National Assembly Delegation Participate in the General Assembly of the World Parliamentary Union - IPU 124 in Panama


With the participation of nearly 800 delegates from 150 member National Assembly delegations; observers and guests, and under the theme "Responsibilities of National Assemblies: Meeting People's Expectations” the General Assembly of the World Inter-Parliamentary Union - IPU 124 took place in Panama City - Capital of the Republic of Panama from April 15th to 20th 2011.
 
 Vietnam’s  National Assembly delegation, headed by H.E. Mr. Nguyen Van Son,  Standing Member, Chairman of  the Foreign Relations Commission participated in IPU 124’s activities.

 IPU 124 focused its discussions on topics regarding the enhancement of the role of National Assemblies; the issues of peace and security, finance and trade with sustainable development, democracy and human rights.

 Vietnam’s delegation actively and positively participated in the Plenary session of  IPU 124 and IPU 260th Executive Committee Meeting, hosted ASEAN +3 Group Meeting, took part in Asia - Pacific meeting (APG), meetings of  Female MPs, Partnership and Gender Equality and a number of other sideline activities.

 In his address at the plenary session, the Head of Vietnam’s delegation Nguyen Van Son gave an outline on Vietnam’s Renewal Process, expressed a strong consensus on IPU 124’s theme and held that in addition to the role of each national parliament, regional and international inter-parliamentary mechanisms also play an important role in promoting responsibilities of national assemblies to meet people's expectations, especially in face of current complex developments of political, socio- economic situation. After confirming the role and responsibilities of the National Assembly of Vietnam in meeting the requirements of the Vietnamese people, in particular and ASEAN, in general through the successful organization of the General Assembly of ASEAN Inter- Parliament (AIPA 31), Mr. Nguyen Van Son proposed  that IPU should continue to strengthen its coordination with other regional parliaments mechanisms, combine activities of those mechanisms to maximize the role of Parliamentary in addressing global challenges in political, economic and social aspects.

During the General Assembly, the Vietnam's National Assembly delegation had meetings and exchanged views with members of the National Assembly delegations of Cuba, Cambodia, Korea, Japan, France, Belgium, South Africa, Chile , Venezuela, Panama, Switzerland… and attended activities held by the host country.

 Vietnam’s Ambassador to Panama, H.E. Mr. Hoang Cong Thuy took part in the main activities of the General Assembly.
