State President arrives in Athens

Hanoi (VNA)- State President Nguyen Minh Triet and his entourage arrived in Athens on June 7, beginning an official visit to Greece in the last leg of his European tour.

President Triet and his wife were greeted at the Athens International Airport by senior diplomats of the host country, including the Greek ambassador to Vietnam, and Vietnamese Ambassador to Greece Nguyen Van Nam.

The official welcome ceremony to President Triet is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace on June 9.

President Triet is expected to hold talks with his Greek counterpart, President Karolos Papoulias, and meet with President of Parliament Dimitris Sioufas later the same day.

Vietnam and Greece set up diplomatic relations in April, 1975 and enjoyed great fruits in the recent past.

A Vietnam visit by Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis in May 2007 and the inauguration of the Greek embassy in Hanoi marked a huge leap forward in bilateral relations.
